The Chili Bowl Midget Nationals
Two weeks after Christmas, the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals arrives like a gift from Santa Claus. In the Oklahoma metropolis of Tulsa, "Santa" is Emmett Hahn and Lanny Edwards, organizers of the most anticipated race of the year since its 1987 inception.
The Chili Bowl is dirt track racing's Super Bowl. The event is held each year at the Tulsa State Fairgrounds Quik Trip Center. The Quik Trip Center is an astounding 448,000 sq. feet, column free building capable of housing 300 midget racers and haulers, a dirt track just shy of being a 1/4 mile oval, seating for over 10,000 fans, a huge trade show and plenty of concessions and restrooms. And the best part.....it is all indoors! How else could you watch dirt track racing during the middle of January in Tulsa Oklahoma?
Racers from every aspect of racing flock to the Chili Bowl to test their skills against the best racers in the world. Entries usually include Nascar drivers such as Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, JJ Yeley, Jason Leffler and more. Sprint Car stars such as Sammy Swindell, Terry, McCarl, Danny Lasoski and Kyle Larson and Dirt Late Model stars such as Tim McCreadie and Jimmy Owens often test their skills in a 800 lb. midget with a 4 cylinder engine that produces 400 HP. You can also see stars like former multi time X-Game Champion and current Lucas Oil Off-Road Series driver Brian Deegan, NHRA driver Cruz Pedregon, and hundreds and hundreds more. Entries usually range from 260 - 300 midgets that battle over 5 consecutive nights for the most elusive crown in all of racing, The Golden Driller.
